In this, my renewed pursuit of figuring out how to translate a pattern into lace, I give you “Two Pair Braids” from Gilian Dye’s Gold & Silver Edgings Sixteenth & Seventeenth Century Lace Book 1.
I used some “metallic” thread and purple linen from my stash. I’m pretty sure this metallic thread behaves differently than thread made with actual metal as this stuff reluctantly stayed on the bobbin. By reluctantly I mean it took every opportunity to escape. The linen made a point of bunching up when it was tightened against the metallic thread as if in protest.
This sample used a lock stitch and picot. Using the contrasting thread I could visualize where that individual bobbin traveled in this pattern, however bobbins are usually wound in pairs. Will I try this pattern again, making another bobbin the contrast, nah, it’s time to move on to the next pattern!
